    In this research article, we report a method to fabricate conducting reduced graphene oxide (rGO) monolayer films reduced by methane plasma treatment within few minutes and the nanoscale characterization of local conductivity via conductive atomic force microscopy (C-AFM), realizing their applicability in highly transparent conducting electrodes.

    Conductive AFM (C-AFM) is a powerful nanoscale characterization tool for simultaneously obtaining the topography and the current distribution of a material. Employment of C-AFM in measuring electrical characteristics of multilayers of GO and RGO films and AFM tip induced electrochemical reduction of GO films have been reported [1,2]. However, these multilayer films show current flows in the range of 100 pA-100 nA at a high bias voltage (100 mV). Fabrication of highly conducting monolayer RGO films is in high demand for nano electronic devices. Here we report a high current (in A) flow in a thermally reduced monolayer film of GO, that at a bias voltage as small as 5 mV (see Fig. 1 for the C-AFM setup and the topographic and current images). The GO was functionalized with tetrabutylammoniumhydroxide (TBAOH) and spin-coated on SiO2 (50 nm)/Si substrates (1 cm2). A mosaic-like monolayer film is formed [3] and then annealed at 800 oC/30 min in Ar/H2 atmosphere [4]. This study offers not only a way of fabricating a continuous conducting RGO film but also its nanoscale electronic property measurement by C-AFM, which is suitable in the field of nano-electronic devices.

    From last decade, the interest of graphene is rising spanning almost all research areas due to its outstanding electrical, optical, mechanical, etc. properties inherited by its 2D structure [1]. Due to this remarkable discovery, the material graphene oxide (GO) became famous as a precursor for graphene synthesis, even though it was discovered about 150 years ago [2]. The GO is oxygenated form of graphene with many oxygen-containing groups (O-groups) and lattice defects. Hence, to fabricate graphene from GO, removal of these O-groups and repairing of the lattice defects is vital. This process is known as reduction [3]. However, to obtain pristine graphene from GO is the most challenging task due to the difficulty in complete removal of O-groups and repairing of lattice defects by conventional reduction method.
    It has been reported that, reduction of GO by high temperature annealing (>1500 oC) is an effective reduction method, particularly in producing conducting RGO films [4]. However, high temperature annealing transforms into high-energy consumption. Further, high temperatures cannot be used on all types of substrates in making graphene films. Therefore, the road to make pristine graphene like material by reducing GO still poses obstacles. As an alternative strategy, thermal annealing of GO in the presence of a carbon source (C-source) such as, ethanol, methane, ethylene, and acetylene via chemical vapour deposition (CVD) has been reported (<1000 oC) [5,6]. In our previously published work, fabrication of conducting RGO films by the restoration of graphitic structure via ethanol-CVD was reported [7]. As a continuation of this work, here we report, with the objective to understand the restoration behaviour of lattice defects, thermal annealing of GO in the presence of various organic solvents such as ethanol, methanol, isopropanol, tert-butanol, ethylene glycol, and toluene.
    To mention the methodology in brief, first a dispersion of GO was spin-coated on SiO2/Si substrates and thermal annealing was done in the presence of the above solvents using a CVD device. Characterization of the synthesized samples was done by Raman spectroscopy, atomic force microscopy (AFM) along with Kelvin probe force microscopy (KPFM), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). Preliminary results showed that there is a significant effect on restoration of lattice defects depending on the organic solvent used. Particularly, the Raman spectroscopic results show the evolution of the G’-peak, which is an indication of restoration of lattice defects, and depending on the C-source the spectral properties change (intensity of G’-peak increases with more carbon atoms). The AFM results showed that the thickness of a single GO sheet has reduced from 1 nm to 0.4 nm due to removal of O-groups upon thermal treatment. Further, conductivity measurements of the synthesized RGO films will be carried out to clarify the solvent dependence on the restoration of lattice defects.

    Raman spectroscopy has evolved into a versatile tool to characterize structural, electronic, and optical properties of graphene-based materials such as pristine graphene, graphene oxide (GO), and reduced graphene oxide (RGO).1) However, in contrast to pristine graphene, Raman spectral analysis of GO and RGO is challenging due to their complex lattice structure.2) Moreover, in most of the reported work, Raman spectra of GO and RGO are measured in their bulk state rather than for single or few-layers, which makes the analysis even more complicated. Generally, Raman spectra of pristine graphene is taken by depositing it on a substrate, particularly on a SiO2(300 nm)/Si substrate as it allows for a better optical visibility of graphene.3) Single or few-layers GO can also be deposited on SiO2(300 nm)/Si substrates by spin coating exfoliated GO dispersion, however, due the highly defected graphitic lattice and the large optical bandgap in GO, its optical visibility is reduced.     The optical visibility of mono- and few-layer graphene oxide (GO) under optical microscope (OM) is challenging even by using 300 nm SiO2/Si substrate, which is the current standard for the visualization of pristine graphene. This is because of the large optical band-gap caused by higher degree of oxidation and intercalated water [1,2]. However, the optical contrast of GO can be improved by annealing GO on 300 nm SiO2/Si substrate. Apart from the optical visualization, the effect of the substrate on intrinsic properties of GO or reduced graphene oxide (RGO) should be taken into consideration. Raman spectroscopy is a versatile tool to characterize structural, electronic, and optical properties of graphene-based materials [3]. A strong dependence of the Raman spectroscopy of monolayer pristine graphene on the thickness of the SiO2 layer has been reported [4]. Yet, an in depth report on the effect of SiO2 thickness or the type of substrate on the Raman spectra of GO and RGO has not been reported. In this work, we show the influence of the substrate on Raman spectral properties (peak position, intensity, etc.) of GO and RGO mono- and few-layer flakes, which is useful in interpreting the Raman spectra of these materials.

    Storage of hydrogen produced from water electrolysis has emerged as a plausible solution to store the renewable energy. In order to enhance the activity of its anodic reaction (oxygen evolution reaction (OER)) the present work deals with the preparation of nitrogen-doped graphene decorated with IrO2 (IrO2-N-rGO) by the hydrothermal method and OER studies by cyclic voltammetry and linear sweep voltammetry.

    Chemical vapor deposition (CVD) is a promising method to produce high quality
    large-size single-crystal graphene, and further increase in domain size is desirable for electro/optic applications. Suppression of the nucleation of graphene is a crucial technique to obtain large-size domains of graphene, and several effective methods have been established such as prolonged annealing, wrapping Cu foils, and high pressure annealing. However, the long processing time of these methods becomes a significant disadvantage for graphene fabrication in industrial scale. Here we report an effective method of suppressing graphene nucleation in atmospheric CVD of Cu by turning off hydrogen supply just before the growth process. Using this method, we reduced the annealing down to 20 minutes and achieved growing isolated graphene domains with 500 micrometers in diameter.

    Advance in nanotechnology opens up opportunities to water desalination due to its atomic thickness, stability and electrical sensitivity. Graphene, with atomistic thickness, has advantages since the water flux increases as the thickness of the membranes decreases. However, a major challenge is to fabricate a high density of nanopores in which it plays a key role in modulating the amount of water flux passing through. Focused ion beam (FIB) techniques have been widely used for microfabrication and nanofabrication. Recently, it has been identified as a promising candidate to produce nanopores in DNA sequencing technologies but not much was found in the field of graphene membranes. In this study, pores in desired dimensions can be introduced by ion beam exposure using FIB technique with the aid of commercial Si3N4 mask. Moreover, the experience gained during the past years of irradiation studies shows that the bombardment of solids with energetic particles induces defects, thus, deteriorates the materials. Therefore, it is crucial to examine the films under the ion beam exposure.
