    Abstract

The difference between X-ray-induced photodarkening (X-PD) and 451 nm laser diode (LD) induced PD (LD-PD) was investigated in DyAlGe-doped silica glasses. The same defect species (Al-OHC, Dy2+, GEC, and GLPC+) are generated in X-PD and LD-PD, although the LD-PD defect population is 10−3 of the X-PD defect population. There is a big difference in the defect population ratio of GEC and Al-OHC and its dependence on Ge concentration. The ratio in LD-PD is higher than that in X-PD. The GEC population of X-PD almost saturates when Ge > 2 wt%. On the other hand, GEC of LD-PD continues to increase even if Ge exceeds 2 wt%. Based on these facts, possible mechanisms of LD-PD and the role of Ge codoping were proposed.

Effects of P-codoping on X-ray/450 nm LD induced photodarkening in Dy3+ doped silica glass and fiber were investigated to develop a visible fiber laser. P and Dy concentrations in Dy-P-doped silica glass were optimized to reduce Rayleigh scattering. It was found in optimized glass that X-ray-induced photodarkening can be well suppressed by P co-doping. 450 nm LD pumped laser oscillation was firstly observed in the fiber using optimized glass. The slope efficiency is 4.2% which is lower than those in Dy-Al-and Dy-Al-Ge-doped fibers previously reported. Contrary to the results of X-ray-induced PD, 450 nm LD-induced photodarkening easily occurred.

    Abstract

X-ray-induced photodarkening and its suppression by Ge-codoping were investigated in Al-doped, Dy-doped, and Dy-Al-doped silica glasses. Absorption bands of 4f-4f5d transition of Dy2+ were determined in Dy-Al-doped silica glass fabricated by Si nano-powders as a reducing agent, and it was found that pair generation of Dy2+ and Al-OHC was occurred in X-ray irradiated Dy-Al-doped silica glass. Ge-codoping suppresses the above-mentioned pair generation and instead forms the pair of GEC and GLPC+. A similar suppression effect of Ge-codoping was observed in Al-Ge-doped silica glass, where pair generation of Al-OHC and Al-E′ center was suppressed. To investigate the stability of defects, annihilation processes during thermal annealing were measured. Al-OHC and Dy2+ are destabilized by Ge-codoping in Al-doped and Dy-Al-doped silica glasses, while GEC is stabilized in Al-Ge-doped and Dy-Al-Ge-doped silica glasses. Based on these results, local structure models around Al, Ge, and Dy ions and possible mechanisms of photodarkening were proposed.

    Abstract

We present the first demonstration of visible laser oscillation in the Dy3+-doped silica fiber pumped by a 451 nm InGaN laser diode. It was found that Ge-co-doping plays the following important roles of laser oscillation: (1) to reduce the Rayleigh scattering loss, (2) to suppress the X-ray-induced and pump-induced photodarkening (PD), and (3) to increase lasing slope efficiency. In a fiber with 0.46 wt% Dy, 1.8 wt% Ge, and 0.54 wt% Al, the slope efficiency is 22.0% at 582.5 nm, and the maximum output power is 18.4 mW.

Multicore photonic crystal fiber (MC-PCF) can scale the output power with the number of cores by spatial beam combining if the in-phase mode is selected. We demonstrated simultaneous realization of phase-locked and mode-locked laser using Yb-doped 7-core MC-PCF by a semiconductor saturable absorber placed in the near-field inside a resonator. High energy 333 nJ pulses were obtained directly from a mode-locked fiber laser oscillator at a 42.4 MHz repetition rate with an average power of 14.1 W at 24 W excitation. We observed the direct output pulse width of 52 ps assuming a sech2 profile. However, it might be noise-like pulses because of no variation when we performed pulse compression. Single-pulse operation was achieved by increasing the bandwidth of the intracavity filter. In this case, 137 nJ, 42.4 MHz pulses were generated with a 5.8 W average power and the compressed output pulse width was 8.6 ps.

Erbium (Er)- and Ytterbium (Yb)-doped optical fibers (EYDFs) have been used in various industrial fields as the only technology suitable for >1 W high-power amplifiers in the 1550-nm band. The output power is mainly limited by unwanted 1-mu m band amplified spontaneous emissions from excited Yb3+; however, the factors affecting the output performance remain unclear. Here, we quantitatively and systematically reveal that the Phosphorus (P)-to-rare earth atomic ratio in the EYDFs has an optimal value for achieving the best output performance of EYDFs. We experimentally evaluated the quantitative relationship among co-dopants by fabricating preforms, drawing them as fibers, and measuring the amplification characteristics. At an appropriate Er concentration (0.3-0.5 wt%), a pump-to-signal conversion efficiency of 45.4% was obtained when the P/(Yb + Er) atomic ratio was around 25. This study paves the way for energy saving in high-power applications, such as high-speed optical wireless communication and long-distance optical ranging.

We present the data showing significant impact of scattering upon base-loss in the VIS/NIR region in bismuth (Bi), yttrium/lithium co-doped germano- and phospho-silicate optical fibers. The fibers were fabricated through standard modified chemical vapor deposition process in conjunction with solution-doping technique and their spectral loss (linear and nonlinear, at different excitation wavelengths) and emission properties were thoroughly studied. Among the features revealed for the fibers, the dependence of unbleached loss on wavelength obeyed (similar to 1/lambda(4)) points on Raleigh scattering behind the phenomenon. Local structure around Yb3+ ions in Yb-P-doped silica glasses and its P concentration dependence were elucidated by EXAFS measurements. Yb-O coordination number was found to change from 4 -> 8 -> 6 -> 7 similar to 8 with increasing the atomic ratio P/Yb. This strange change can be corresponded to the local structure changes in the order of YbPO4-like, Yb(PO3)(3)-like to YbP5O14-like local structures. This correspondence is supported by various optical measurements, such as the Rayleigh/Mie scattering, Raman scattering, absorption cross-section, CT transition, and X-ray induced defect formation, which were also found to depend on P/Yb. These results provide a guideline of the suitable P concentration in REP-doped silica glasses for various applications. (C) 2019 The Japan Society of Applied Physics

We report a reproducible fabrication process ensuring repeatable absorption and emission properties of bismuth (Bi) doped silica-glass optical fibers (BDFs) with single-mode operation above similar to 800 nm. BDFs were fabricated through a modified chemical vapor deposition process in-line with the solution-doping technique. Lithium-germanosilicate, yttrium-germanosilicate, and yttrium-phosphosilicate glasses were used as hosts for Bi. Bi and other dopant concentrations were measured by EPMA. similar to 0.07wt% of Bi content is obtained with a transparent core. The absorptive and emissive properties of BDFs in the VIS-NIR range (targeted onto 600-900 nm) were studied thoroughly. This study is oriented to the development of VIS/NIR lasers and amplifiers, using BDFs of this type. (C) 2019 Optical Society of America under the terms of the OSA Open Access Publishing Agreement

This study demonstrates that phosphorus-related radiation-induced absorption (RIA) bands such as P-OHC and P1 in erbium/ytterbium-doped optical fibers (EYDFs) are effectively decreased by germanium (Ge) co-doping. The suppression of the generation of both P-OHC during X-ray irradiation of glass preforms and P1 during gamma-ray irradiation of optical fibers was measured for Ge concentrations between 0 wt% and 6.7 wt%. For the 10 krad X-ray irradiation of glass preforms, it was found that the RIA decreased from 5.6 dB/cm to 1.3 dB/cm when the Ge concentration was increased from 0.79 wt% to more than 4.4 wt%. Furthermore, in multimode optical fibers (MMFs) exposed to 100 krad of gamma-ray irradiation, the RIA decreased from 3.7 dB/m to 0.90 dB/m when the Ge concentration was increased from 0.0 wt% to 4.0 wt%, whereas it was 0.35 dB/m for a single-mode optical fiber (SMF) with a Ge concentration of 6.7 wt%. These results demonstrate that Ge concentrations up to 4.4 wt% are strongly correlated with improved radiation tolerance for both glass preforms and optical fibers. This effect was more prominent for SMFs than MMFs and became saturated with excess co-doping in both cases. Therefore, Ge co-doping may represent a good solution for reducing P-related RIA in EYDFs for space applications.

The refractive index and density of halogen-doped silica glasses were measured as a function of fictive temperature, and the relationship between the refractive index and density was discussed on the basis of the Lorentz-Lorenz formula. The effect of halogen doping on the change in the refractive index was divided into two parts. The refractive index change was found to be strongly affected by structural rearrangement resulting from the termination of Si-O-Si bondings by halogens, as well as by the mean polarizability change caused by replacing oxygen with halogen. © 2007 Elsevier B.V. Emission spectra of Sn, Sb, Pb and Bi doped silica glasses co-doped with Al and P prepared by modified chemical vapor-phase deposition (MCVD) using solution doping technique are presented. Bi doped silica glasses present emission/excitation (Em/Ex) bands around 470/(330, 220nm) 600/(470, 350, 270nm), 730 and 830/(820, 420, 380, 250nm), with the intensity ratio of these bands depends on the composition, indicating that different emission sources (valence states or defects) are present together. The Em/Ex of Sb doped silica glasses also depend on composition, and are similar of Bi doped silica glasses. The lifetime at 830 and 1400 in Bi or Sb doped silica glasses are similar and around 60 and 850μs, respectively. The lifetime around 600nm was 3.2 and 11μs, respectively to Bi and Sb doped silica glasses. The Sn doped silica glass present Em/Ex bands around 305/265nm, 400/(270, 340nm) and 430/280nm. The Pb doped silica glass present Em/Ex around 370/290nm and 540/320nm. No significant change in the emission bands in the visible range are observed when the Sn or Pb doped silica glass are co-doped with Al or P. The present results of Em/Ex suggest that Bi and Sb can be candidate for fiber lasing in visible range (around 600nm) using the available LD pumping (ex: 405nm). Despite Sn and Pb doping shows strong emission around 400nm, unfortunately until now there is no LD that can be used as pumping source.

Long-period fibre grating (LPFG) writing by a CO2 laser-annealing using a fibre-drawing process is demonstrated. The fibre in the drawing process was irradiated periodically by a CO2 laser to modify the refractive index. An LPFG with transmission loss of - 10 dB and full width at half-maximum of 13 nm has been fabricated. Results show that the refractive index change was induced by stress at the moment of laser annealing.

Fictive temperature dependence of density fluctuation in SiO2 glass was investigated by the small-angle x-ray scattering measurement. The density fluctuation in SiO2 glass varies linearly to the fictive temperature. Contribution of structural relaxation to the density fluctuation is larger than that of phonons. Isothermal compressibility, relaxational isothermal compressibility and high-frequency adiabatic compressibility are estimated. If N, -, and Delta represent the number of SiO4/2 unit, average and difference from average, respectively, the density fluctuation in SiO2 glass is less than 3.6% as (&UDelta;N) over bar)(2)/(N) over bar.
